A change of (rainy) scenery

Friday 11th July

As beautiful as our view from here is, it's good to get a change from time to time. This week we took a few days out to travel 12km to Hillside "Nature Lifestyle" Lodge, owned by our friend Holger. During low season it's very quiet everywhere and we were almost the only guests - just one other couple. The Lodge is in the same valley as the former Khone & Khoun Bungalows, where we spent many happy times in the first few years we came to Laos.

Fortunately, the rain held off and we were able to get out for walks. And to swim in the pool. Rainy season has definitely been rainier this year than last so far, but we're tough and quite used to going around with umbrellas!

One of our fellow-guests, Matthew, is an artist and did this quick sketch of Trevann

Hillside is a lovely spacious resort with 9 bungalows set in gardens with ponds, big trees, ponies, etc.

A few hundred yards down the road this area of forest has been cleared by a Thai company ready to install a big solar array.

The food at Hillside is exceptional. This is Ton khao kai, a coconut-based soup. Delicious

Sunshine, showers and the occasional rainbow

The pool looked small but was actually plenty big enough for proper swimming

This was our bungalow

Back to Ban Naxangvuey rainy season views!

The garden is thriving - and most of the mangos have gone

Every day the village children gather to play outside in the street

The good thing about rainy season is that walking is much more pleasant than when the afternoons are so hot. We walked over the hill to a local wat we hadn't visited before

Sleeping on duty

From the other side of the valley our house looks as though it's part of the new one behind!

Caterpillar season. This is one of the many swallowtails

Yes, raining again!
